Nomadic Shelter

Project type

Academic & individual

Date

February 2022 - April 2022

Location

Demchig Hiid, Omnogovi Province, Mongolia

The design concept revolves around air as a primary element, integrating it into the shelter’s functionality. The pod consists of two architectural components: a permanent outer shell and a lightweight, transportable inner dwelling. The outer shell, made of Corten-steel with adjustable flaps, protects against the extreme desert climate. The internal structure is a tent-like, air-insulated enclosure that can be inflated or deflated for easy transport.

Inspired by the nomadic lifestyle of Mongolia’s herders, the design adapts to seasonal migrations between summer pastures and winter camps. It modernizes the traditional yurt by using air as both a structural and insulating element, optimizing ventilation and thermal comfort. The modular system preserves cultural spatial arrangements while enhancing social interaction and adaptability.

Research into temporary structures highlights air’s insulation properties, allowing for climate control through adjustable fins. The outer shell remains on-site, blending with the rocky desert landscape, while the inner dwelling can be transported, ensuring comfort and protection throughout seasonal migrations
