De-colonial Museum
Project type
Academic & Individual
Date
August 2022 - November 2022
Location
Rhodes Memorial, Cape Town, South Africa
This project addresses a highly sensitive site both ecologically and socially, aiming to redefine architectural language by moving away from imposing structures. The design seeks to integrate harmoniously with the surrounding environment, rejuvenating both the landscape and its purpose. It challenges the dominant presence of the Rhodes Memorial while uplifting the endangered ecology, severely affected by the 2021 fires. The space is designed to educate, inspire, and attract university students who currently disengage from the site.
Drawing from the contrast between the Rhodes Memorial and the Great Zimbabwe enclosure, the design emphasizes inward-focused, protective spaces. This enclosed atmosphere offers a counterpoint to the memorial’s expansive and outward-reaching form. As part of a decolonial museum procession, the building is dedicated to the history and art of the Khoi San people. Murals specific to the Western Cape narrate the San’s story, engaging visitors as they move through the space.
