Bridging the Gap
Project type
Academic & Collaborative
Date
February 2024 - July 2024
Location
Philippi, Cape Town, South Africa
This project establishes a self-sustaining social enterprise that empowers young adults transitioning out of orphan care. Maker’s Spaces provide vocational training, employment pathways, and business incubation, balancing privacy with community engagement. Modular structures support expansion, ensuring long-term sustainability through reinvested profits.
The site integrates sustainable farming and economic networks while addressing threats from urban development. The Fountain of Hope offers at-risk youth from high-unemployment areas a transitional space, shifting from charity to a revenue-generating model. Inspired by Professor Kerrin Myers, Maker’s Spaces enable craftsmen to rent facilities, train apprentices, and sell products, while companies pay to hire trained participants, reinvesting profits into the program.
By combining sustainability, economic empowerment, and ecological preservation, this project creates a transformative space for long-term community impact.
